This thread is to keep track of my Trekker project from the beginning. This is the truck that is receiving the “LONG box Trekker” conversion Corey is working on here: http://toyotatrekker.proboards107.com/in....read=1192200169 As I am working on this post Corey is working on the last stages of the conversion. I am still trying to figure out a color for the whole truck. Right now I am leaning towards the new FJ40 blue, but I am also considering the original Toyota Truck blue in 1982 that my truck, and from the looks of Corey’s pictures, the Trekker parts he started with originally was. I have to make a decision soon The whole outside of the truck will be done in the Line-X bedliner coating color matched to which blue i finally decide on.
Why the bedliner coating on the outside of a truck? My brother answered this question best by asking “Why would you spend the time and money you are spending on a truck you know your going to take off road, and paint it with something you know is going to scratch and deteriorate?”
As for the Line-X choice. That is more a matter of Corey doing his half of the truck in Canada and me getting the rest of the panels done in Texas. They have convenient locations for both of us.
The reason this whole project came to be. I bought a brand new 1994 Toyota extended cab 4x4 truck. I named it the turtle truck. Camped Colorado and Texas in it. Traded it in for a brand new Jeep Wrangler in 1999. Man that 4.0L engine was nice Bullet proof like the 22re but so much more power. But I lost a lot of carrying space with the Jeep. For 2 adults it is ok. Cramped, loaded with all of the camping stuff, but livable. Carrying anything over 5’ home from the home improvment stores can be dangerous and definitely not convienient. a 4x8 sheet of anything is impossible. Now it is 2007. I have a 3 year old son. Taking a week long trip to NM in a jeep with a 2 year old strapped into a car seat in the back seat severely limits your dry carrying capacity for everything needed to support 2 adults and one kid for a week.
Aside from the 2 previous vehicles (and the Honda Civic i traded the Jeep in for) I really do not like cookie cutter vehicles. Even with everything that I did to the Jeep, it was just a Jeep that someone had done some stuff to. You see those all of the time. (and I could not find a reasonable hard top Jeep Scrambler that the hard top covered the entire box)
What I was looking for. So I traded the Jeep in for something that gets more then twice the gas milage as the Jeep to get me to and from work. I started looking for something out of the ordinary, but able to fit my new set of carrying requirements. It needed to: * Be able to pass Texas emissions. (it will be a daily driver as well) * Parts had to be available for it. Both after market and replacement. * Roughly the same power as the Jeep. (once you have it, it is very noticeable when it is gone. such as going back to a 22re) * Have enough dry space to carry everything needed for 2 adults and one toddler through early teen to tent camp for a week. * Be able to haul 2 x anything x 8’ - 10’ home from the lumber yard.
I was looking at the older 4runners, but really wanted a solid front axle. I still remember the ordeal of replacing the CV boots on my 1994 truck not believing how much work was involved for something Toyota (or any of the other manufacturers) know will wear out. As unique as it would have been I was not sure I wanted to do the front axle swap. I would like it to be as factory as possible but am not against upgrading / swapping thing out to fill the requirements.
What I have come up with. In October 2006 I was driving somewhere locally and passed a 1982 Toyota Long bed 4x4 Truck for sale on a corner. Called the number and in 30 minutes it was mine. The bed is rusted but the whole truck is straight. The initial plan was to just put a camper top on it and call it even for a while. Then I read something about a Trekker that Toyota farmed out to be built. That seemed like the answer to all of my requirements! Right around that time Corey started posting on 4x4 Wire about recreating the Trekkers. He quickly popped my bubble about my truck by informing me there were only short bed Trekkers. I spent a half a day in the garage with a tape measure trying to figure out if i could shorten my frame to get one to fit. It was just going to be way too much work. He suggested that he could lengthen one of the 3 he had just purchased to fit the long bed frame.
So now there will be even more dry storage space behind the rear seat then an original Trekker. And as far as both of us know, it will be the only one in existence. I have since bought a complete running (even passes the texas emissions) 1989 4.3L s10 pickup which will be donating its engine and wiring harness to this project. (in the mean time it is hauling things home from the home improvement stores)
As it stands right now. I had to take the “roll bar” off of it and take some air out of the tires to get it into the garage. Someone put 35“ tires on it, a 3” body lift and what i think is a 6” Rancho lift on it. The wheels I will be keeping, but the tires will go down to 33 x 12.5. The body lift will go down to 2“ and the suspension lift will go down to 3”. I have been collecting parts for the most part right now as I am waiting to get the body stuff complete. So far I have collected... * The front Wincher bumper http://www.kenmtn.com/html/wincher.asp * Rear disk brake conversion kit http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/ http://www.tsmmfg.com/3110.htm#Contact%20Information * Carpet kit and matching extra carpet for the Trekker part http://www.stockinteriors.com/AutoCarpet.asp?Itemid=3985&MakeId=37&ModelId=484 * the long bed Trekker http://toyotatrekker.proboards107.com/in....read=1192200169
When I get the Trekker box from Corey it will be the color it needs to be and finished as far as the outside goes. My goal is to have the rest of the trucks exterior finished so when his part comes in the outside of the truck should be pretty much done.

Here are 2 pictures of it from the night i bought it to serve as a starting point. Yes. Those are really 35" tires. That is a standard 6 foot tall wood fence it is parked against. It is a ridiculous amount of lift in my opinion and as you will see in the next set of pictures i post, not safely done.
I can only guess at the history of this truck by what i see, but at one point someone put a decent amount of time and money into it. The entire truck was repainted white inside and out instead of the original factory blue. The body is straight (although the bed is pretty rusty). The frame still looks to have most of its paint on it and just surface rust in the places it is missing its paint from bangs and scrapes. The engine has been changed (still a 22r). Whatever body damage it has had in the front has been fixed. (I know this because the entire length of the core support is now a bolt on piece. Which will help out a lot in the engine swap ) A nice later model bench seat was installed and the door panels recovered in the interior. At one point it even had a decent stereo / amplifier / speakers in it. (known by the miles of speaker wire / rc cables I pulled out of it)
Since whenever this time and money had been spent on it, it seems the truck has fallen on hard times. Or its owners have, or they lost interest in it. Hard to say. Right now it is just a spent truck.
Next post... Sins of the past.

Sins of the past: It has several that need to be ironed out.
* The body lift being the first. I purchased a 2" body lift from http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/ToyotaPickupBodyLift.shtml Everything I have read about the 4.3L conversion suggests at the minimum a 2" body lift for distributor / firewall / exhaust manifolds clearance. Personally I dont really care for body lifts, but I do not want to get into cutting or hammering part of the firewall to be able to change the distributor cap. (or to be able to position the engine correctly or route the exhaust, which ever it ends up being)
* Suspension is next. I will be purchasing the shocks and springs from Downey (3" lift). The front shock towers have just started to pull away from the frame so I have purchased New ones from here: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/4R_suspension-III.shtml#ShockTowers2.0
* Additional stuff: Since the bed is going to be off the frame before the Trekker conversion is delivered i purchased an aux. fuel tank from here (TPA-1): http://www.nwmp.com/
* Where it is right now: In the garage with the fenders, hood and doors off of it. I have to disassemble the doors this afternoon and load everything up in the donor truck to take to the Line-x place Saturday morning to get an estimate.
Some pictures of the things I will be fixing when the parts arrive:

Hi Corey... I called them and asked a list of questions then ordered it off their website (view the catalog, all models of toyota and you will see it listed TPA-1) I also found what looks to be the same thing on the Downey site here: http://www.downeyoff-road.com/BodyComponents/AuxiliaryTanks.html
I am bringing all of the body panels to the Line-X place in the morning so they can give me an estimate on the coating of them. Once the truck is running again I will bring it back up there to do the small section between the doors and the bed and the cowling under the windshield. I am leaving the pillars and the roof white.
You should take a few days and work on your projects it might not pay the bills, but it sure is satisfying!

Well, I took the panels to the Line-X place this morning. $1500 to cover the hood, doors, fenders and the lower piece that connects the fenders under the bumper. It would cost an additional $800 more to sandblast the panels to metal. Needless to say, the panels are back in the garage and I am stripping them myself. I also got the core support off this afternoon. Stripped the hood and lower piece that connects the fenders to metal with paint stripper. Fenders tomorrow and doors Monday. Then back to Line-X.

A short update because I did not have much time to work on the panels today. I did get about 80 percent of one fender stripped, but had to stop to replace the rear brakes on the Civic. I did decide on the final color of the truck. Toyota 857 Nordic Blue. It is the color the truck was originally. (up until someone repainted it white inside and out)
Also, something was bothering me with the Lewisville Line-X place. I did not feel like they were too interested in spraying the individual panels. One top of that, the guy I talked to came across as kind of a jerk. It turns out I was not the only person who has had that impression with him. A friend of mine went there to get his bed lined and was so unimpressed with him he took it to a different Line-X place to be done. I did a little searching with google and came across this post in a tundra thread...
Quote:Re: Spray in Bed Liner - Rhino vs. Line-X I paid around $350 for Rhino. I've looked at both. I really don't use my bed for hauling much around, and then only stuff like scuba tanks, furniture, etc. For that reason, I went with Rhino since it has more grip than Line-X. On the flip side, from what I've been told, Line-X is more heavy duty (harder to scratch, penetrate) and less affected by UV.
Here in Lewisville, I had 2 dealers, one Line-X the other Rhino. Rhino was cheaper at the time, plus the sales person for Line-X was being a real A$$*(L#. Since they both have pretty much the same kind of warranty, I went with the person who treated me better. |
|
A little more reading in the same thread turned up several good things said about the guy who owns this Line-X place in Ft Worth: http://www.linexfortworthtexas.com/?gclid=CIHz5JSvoY8CFSaDIgodbT9ZHg He is about twice as far as the Lewisville Line-X place from me, but by looking at his photo gallery, how long he has been doing this and reading his own post in the above thread here: http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/1g....-2/#post449477, this seems like the best one to go to.
The one in Lewisville is new and right next door to a Ford dealer, so maybe they have a sweet deal with them spraying new truck beds and dont need the extra business?

Another short update. I called the new Line-X place this morning and got a hard quote over the phone for all of my body panels. $800 color matched to Nordic Blue, Code 857. AND THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE STRIPED TO THE METAL! The guy could not understand why #1 the Lewisville place was so much money and #2 why they wanted them stripped to metal. Especially since they do not have any rust and they are straight. So I have an appointment at the Line-X of Ft Worth Thursday morning at 9am to drop off the panels. He said I could pick them up Saturday.
Tonight I finished up the fender I started stripping yesterday. I found the window channels at the dealer (2 to 3 weeks to get them, but they are still available) I need to call them back tomorrow and see if the door to window squeegees inside and out are still available.
Also got a ship notification this morning that the door seals shipped out today. So I am guessing I should be getting those later this week.

I took the panels to Line-X place yesterday morning. They started working on the as soon we took them out of the donor truck. The lady said they might be done today, but no later then tomorrow. So either way I should have them back this weekend. Yesterday I cut all of the mounts to the bed of the truck. Today I am having the local junk man pick up the bed today to get it out of the way. Also, going to the dealer to special order the rest of the door pieces I need to complete the doors.

ok... today was a busy day. I got a lot of stuff done. The biggest news, I picked up the panels at Line-X! I think they look great! I also took the bed off and strapped it to the donor truck and brought it to the local junk yard. Tomorrow will be for wire brushing the frame and putting Por 15 on it.
I received the new door panels today also.
Now I am looking around and seeing what else I can Line-X Lots of interior pieces need some help.
