I'll post up a few pictures of this Trekker from the ads. I will bring it home tomorrow to asses how bad a shape she is in. This Trekker was an SR5 slider windows, arm pads etc... Quick Specs ------------------------ It has a fairly new 4.3 in it (previous owner claims that it has had one oil change since it was broke in we will see....) Plasma rings 350 Forged slugs 10.5:1 compression O-ringed block Complete Crower cam set (cam, roller lifters, push-rods, valve springs) Stainless Valves with bronze valve guides & umbrella seals Eddlebrock intake manifold Holley Projection 4DI, 4barrel version and to round it out it has some long tube headers (unknown brand) the exhaust will have to be rerouted previous owner did a bad job... Electric Fan For the radiator Oil cooler with electric fan and 4 optima red tops in this thing (will cut it down to just two most likely) Also has a NV4500 adapted to a toy t-case (RF1A), which the previous owner claims is all new from the bell housing to the end of the t-case (ordered it all from Advanced adapters, came on a pallet completely assembled, and he installed it at the same time he built the motor) It has brand new drive shafts that he ordered from Tom Woods.... 4.10's front and rear on 35's, they are the older syle 4cyl thirds with the small bolts in the flange... Front end needs a rebuild its leaking 90W out the knuckle balls, but it has a posi in the front, with what the owner claims to be new shafts (don't know what that means???, doubt it has longfields, or newfields....) Previous also loaded me up with all the spare toyota parts he had including (as if my two small garages were not toyota junk yards already) IFS rotors, calipers, solid axle rotors with free wheel hubs and spindles, and the original axles still in great shape... Rear end works fine has a full Detroit that locks up great and doesn't wine or make any noise at all, e-brake even works great... 3" lift springs with a 2" body lift (needed for the 4.3 & NV4500) I hate body lifts, but for now its on there... Very old school truck build with mostly Downey & NWOR parts (alot of them are quite old) I will also mention that I don't care for either of those companies, but it does add to the nostalgic nature of it all... Now for some pics from the ad... I'll take some more once I get her home tomorrow. The pics make the frame look worse than it really is, however it does have rust in the usual 1st gen places 2nd body mount (which I will fix) Low res I know (previous owner took it)

When I got to the truck the previous owner told that the truck had not been fired in almost two years . He had charged the batteries though when he posted it. It cranked for about 5 seconds and then caught ran really rough for about 15 seconds then plained out. I test drove 4 times while I was at this guys house, every time I started it she would run smoother and smoother... The previous owner did tell me though that he hasn't ever even hooked the EFI up to a computer to tune it, he plugged it in and it started and ran ok so he never messed with it, so after cleaning her up a little that will be my first mission... Thirdly Okiyota is a good friend of mine so you will probably see both of us working on both of our Trekkers (his is a really nice one) And I have to say this just for him... I want to be just like Tommy (maybe some day if i try real hard, it is a long and tedious path to get there though not for the faint of heart it will require great intestinal fortitude, at least being able to eat 2 4x4s in one sitting I am not up to that level of play ) he has been joking with me since I picked this truck up yesterday. On a side note what are the odds of both of us finding Trekkers in Colorado and within 45 miles of each other? ??

AHAHAHAAAHHA!! Truly gangster my friend, I cant wait to get home and check it out!
And dont worry, we'll work on your "intestinal fortitude" some more next time we're in Vegas!!
We are definitely going to have some Trekker wheeling trips now!!

Welcome to the board. Nice to see a new owner and a new project. I hear you on the NWOR parts. My brother in law gave me a set of NWOR springs that he said were too stiff after a week....I never installed them, they would be great for a dump truck.
Looks like the headliner will be a first victim. I am a little jealous of the 4.3, I think that is what Michael (msrwerks) is putting in the long Bed Trekker.
Enjoy the Trekker and keep us updated...

Well towed it home, it was to dark to get pictures... Since the fuel is old I dumped in injector cleaner and some octane booster then went over to a gas station and filled it up with premium... Computer still needs alot of tunning.... And I am noticing some pining at no load lite throttle, played with the timing (was at 14* when I popped the hood) turned it down to 8* and it still pings. I even turned it down to 0* and it still pings at light throttle with no load, so I am not sure about that. (mechanical advance works fine though) Also noticed that my vacuum advance for the distributer is not working (i set the base timing with the vacuum advance unplugged to 0*, 4*, 8*) and the distributer didn't pull any more timing once I plugged it back in... I did pull vacuum on the advance with the lungs and it did advance the timing... (previous owner advanced the cam timing 4* so I wonder if its not making enough vacuum at idle to advance the distributer) Also could be a lean mixture, so i ordered the software to tune the computer (previous owner said he never tuned it at all..., i may be lucky that it runs at all So no driving it until i get that pining worked out of it, on a side note I dont notice the pinging under way (either that or I just cant hear it) Also could be really bad gas I am not sure yet...

Well this hasn't been updated in quite awhile... Engine problems were kind of weird to me so here is what has been done so far... Replaced the plugs all 6 were fouled, 4 of 6 I loosened by hand ... After replacing the plugs and wires and getting the distributer NOT 180* out the thing runs alot better... I have also started playing with the fuel maps and the thing is really starting to come around, lots of torque!!! I have the engine running a little on the rich side for safety (at this time) until I get it dialed in all the way. Idles like a top now at 750 RPM and is smooth as glass when winding it up... Just today I set the base timing at 12* so we will see how she runs with that much advance... Laundry list of whats going to get fixed... Engine ----------- water pump (old one is weeping, already have the new one just need to install it) Fuel pump the old one is having trouble maintaining 15 psi (required by the stand alone engine management system). Also need to research another tank option because the carb tank sloshes really bad once you get below half a tank... Fuel cell or maybe drop the old tank and give it some baffles (I dont like the idea of welding on a fuel tank although I know it can be done safely). I also dont want a surge tank just because I think that is a little tacky in lue of a normal fuel cell... So i'll be thinking of different ideas on this one... Interior needs to go its in really bad shape After playing with the truck I have decided that the Trekker has 5.29's in it due to my rpms on the freeway gets up to 70 fast... Compression check the engine and its pretty tight 155-160psi cold so probably a bit higher hot... I have some goodies to start adding to this rig, off of my old 83 (which is being built into a truggy in my garage) Sky's widening kit (FJ-80 rotors, with the big 4 piston calipers, and I have sky's rear disc brake kit for the rear.. Made my 83 stop on a dime without much effort... I also have off of my old truck an IFS rear so I will be as wide as a IFS truck front and rear after its all said and done I will throw on my old MSD in to this truck! Also have high steer sitting in a box in the garage...

very cool ... keep us up dated ! X2...curious to see how your 4.3 ends up. Throwing that conversion idea around too. Always on the look out for good deals. Seems like the 4.3 route might be a little cheaper than the 3.4 Toy route. Curious about your Truggy, always like to see what other projects people are working on

Well I fixed the tach today, off of this writeup, works perfect found all I needed at radio shack... www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/tachmod.htmAlso installed an old msd 6AL that I had lying around... Started looking at the engine compartment and realized that the truck had a msd in it at one point, the mounting pucks were still in place so I just wired it up and screwed it down... Threw some new plugs on it gapped to .050", can tell that it runs far smoother still... Side note all the autoparts stores around here quit carrying NGK (best plugs in my opinion) kind of weird...

Ok have completed a little more work on the beasty,
Pulled the belts, water pump, alt., oil pan, and timing cover...
Turns out the leaking water pump was just a bolt that had not been "RTV'ed" cleaned the water pump all up and that problem was fixed...
Then pulled the Oil pan so that I could get a look at the timing cover found a few pieces of metal in the bottom of the pan ( makes since, the owner told me the engine was new, also can tell in just the time I have owned that the motor has loosened up a considerable amount) other than that the bottom end checked out just fine (visually).
Then pulled the timing cover, has a double roller cloyes hex-a-just timing set... Crank sprocket was setup for 4* advance reset it to 0*, then the cam sprocket was setup for 6* advance also reset it to 0*... This motor was pulling over 10* of timing advance hehehe...
Needless to say this made driving the truck home last night a very smooth event compared to what it was just earlier yesterday... The motor is so smooth now its not even funny... It also is capable of doing 80+ with complete ease (not that I need to go that fast)....
The kicker is that I spent 100$ yesterday on nothing but gaskets and fluids (This stuff is getting expensive these days, I remember when it wasn't, and I am only 26... sad)
Also I checked the truck for leaks yesterday about 5 times on my drive back home not a drop yet!

Yeah son!
I'm on my way home in about 6 hours! Then its full kill mode on my wiring harness, time to get it running again, I miss driving it too much!

Ok I have one leak after a few days... the crankshaft seal that I reused is weeping just a little, I have a new one in hand and it will be fixed ASAP...
Pulled the 2nd Gen bench seat and threw in my 83's seats, WAY better, also pulled out the headliner it was in really bad shape and would bounce on the top of my head when driving down the road, and no i am not that tall...
Rest of the interior will start coming out shortly....
Also plan on adding my Sky wheel spacers from my old truck shortly, need to get one more inner hub seal and I'll be ready...

Well completed the wider hub swap, as well as going to the big piston calipers, much better stopping power, and a bit wider stance (ifs width in front now) I also pulled the interior out of the entire truck.... yuck it was always dusting me with junk when i would drive it.... its all gone now, looks alot cleaner.... Need to swap my IFS rear end into this truck, (has monte carlo calipers and chevy quarter ton calipers) Also have been pondering a different engine... I like the 4.3 gobs of torque however filling it with premium is starting to get old 16 mpg also sucks.... Tough though with a lifted truck and big tires no motor is going to get great mileage.... I also have some alcan 4" lift springs for the front in the garage however still need some time to figure it all out.... on a side note I have some high steer arms in a box any body want to trade for the older cross over steering setup?

i can relate to the power to gas mileage dilemma. I was halfway considering swapping something for my 22R, but now I think I will rebuild it when the time comes...
I might still have the original steering components from my '81. I can take a look tomorrow and send you some pictures of it if you are interested in swapping for your high steer arms. I have also got a dropped drag link I only used for a month I could throw in too.
