so finally got a chance to tear into the back 1/2 .. and WOW . I must say there is NO lack of fasteners .. no word of a lie , I pulled at least 100 fasteners out of there .. I absolutly can not see removing the factory topper on these Trekkers , and replaceing them ... my new ones will be engineered to do so , but holy cow .. well maybe you'll be able to see the pain I went threw in the pics .. :hillbill:

ok ... here is the bottom of the tub ... extended . EVERY piece of metal in the bed was rotten .. there was only a couple of pieces left .. This was the WORST failed part of the whole unit ... 22G Original .. I replaced with 14G and top side The bed sides have now also been extended ... inside is now complete .. still have to "work" the out side Just cut the topper/canopy .. and ready to find some new side glass , and bond the to pieces together .. then its time to do the final outside prep. ..

so got to work on the topper/canopy .. cut and now "loosly" spliced .. I started looking at the bolting strips .. Man , they are just a balsa wood material .. I dont know what the hell , but totally trashed .. so I stripped them out as well fell out in pieces , no wonder the roof bounces like a drum NEW ones I made from spruce . ALSO every piece of steel (22G) was TOTALLY rotten .. so I replaced with 14G and also ZINC'd them , so NO more rust and now its ready .. and finished the inside .

holy cow .... I'm thinking I only want to do this project once . what alot of work . anyway , heres the top .. still working on body lines , but pretty good now . also cutting/filling the window openings .. these are completly different windows .. not just a bolt in . and the ROUGH .. ROUGH window fit

so Progress Michael pulled the plastic cover off because it was all cracked and missing pieces where it is riveted onto the door .. "hemed and hawed" about what I was going to do .. I was going to make a mould , and make a completly new one .. but to much time and money involved there , so I decided to repair the holes , and send it off to line-x as well .. it'll work out great . and match the rest of the rig . hatch cover repaired and sanded and ready for line-x rear hatch is now completly apart , and ready for some line-X

That looks great Corey!!! So those are the original hinges from Winnebago that will be on the conversion? The hatch plastic cover you are talking about... is that on the inside or the outside? The outside of the hatch will be Line-X'ed too along with the rest of the bed / top too, right? Color... My truck was originally 857 blue. It looks like the Trekker you started with for the long box conversion was 854 blue. I am stuck I am kind of leaning towards the darker color (857) but I dont know. I guess I should just flip a coin I found this site that actually shows you the difference between them (even though they are Landcruisers) coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/colorcodes.html

That looks great Corey!!! So those are the original hinges from Winnebago that will be on the conversion? yes .. original .. there in OK shape .. but maybe could use new chrome plating , as they do have some pitting and cracking chrome . I am trying to get new .. just havent heard back yet from them . inside .. it covers the metal where it is glued to the fiberglass hatch . because it is hard Plastic , it's very easy to damage and crack .. The line-x will make it stronger and more durable , and also match the exterior .. what do you think ? it's up to you . YES .. It has been prepped , and ready to go. cool thing is .. now you can pick ANY color ..

so a wee bit to post ... rear section has now been removed again .. time to start working on that . Originally , the back half sits on a "winnabego" frame , that mounts to the Toyota frame . Bushings were toast , and not worthy of the new set-up .. got me to thinkin' The Original mounts , I dont think were sufichant , because of all of the "leaks" I hear about , so I thought a softer compound mount would work better with the flexing , and handle a better "sway" of the back 1/2 . So I ended up purchacing some NEW "special" mounts , and some steel to make a new frame . got it all "tacked up " under the body , so now time to weld it all up . boxing the ends . another "goofy" part of the Trekkers is the rear lamps .. They have these silly metal " u " brackets that hold the lamps in place .. you have to drill a hole in your lamps , and mount them to the brackets dumb ..... so took the pockets from the 79-83 beds I build , and glassed them into the Trekker Very rough right now .. but at least they will be easy to install , and RE & RE .

so , almost got er' finished up today .. got the rear supports tacked into place , and also some front supports . Once the back 1/2 is back on the truck , I will be able to perminantly mount them to the fenders . pulled it out again , welder it all up and got er' into primer .. shoot on some black tomorrow , and all done that part .

that looks great corey! so it is going to still all work with the 2" body lift i just dropped the cab down to as well? and i still use the bushing you are supplying for the trekker part instead of the urethane ones that came with the cab set?
