Well, I'm new to this board but certainly not new to Toyota trucks, especially first gens. I recently picked up a sweet little '82 Trekker out of El Paso. In fact, it was posted on the for sale board here: toyotatrekker.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=trekker&action=display&thread=396Here's the "Sherpa" So, I've spent the past week or so kind of assessing the condition and figuring out where I wanna go with this thing. The frame and body are in awesome shape. I have one small spot in the forward right corner of the passenger side floorboard that needs some patch work and thats about it! The first thing that's gonna get some much needed attention is the suspension. The leaf springs on this little jewel (mostly the front) are flat out BEAT. In fact they both are beyond flat with a negative arch. Poor springs are "hurtin for certain" so much so that the front diff has kissed the oil pan at some point in the past and dented it up pretty good. So, I've got some 3" front springs and 2.5" rear springs on the way. Once I get those installed I'll definitely be rebuilding the front axle...the driver side birf is leaking all over my driveway. My plans after that are to regear to 5.29 and aussie the rear and run 33s. I'll be focusing on the interior after that. The dash and instrument cluster is PRISTINE as it is...I'll be replacing flooring/carpet, headliner and upholstery. Somewhere in the future is a Weber 32/36, a crawler cam from Engnbldr, and a header with 2" exhaust. So...thats it for right now....let the fun begin!!! wvt

Looks like a great base. Your floor is an awesome shape compared to a lot of them out there. the passenger side wiper (around the birf ball) actually looks pretty good compared to mine, wonder if the front was rebuilt in the past just not done correctly. or maybe you did a great job cleaning up the underside...
on your gear choice: 4.88's are a great match for 33's, are you eventually planning on going with bigger tires, hence the 5.29's? Just curious, I know my 5.29's give great driveability around town/highway and on the trail with 35's tires.

So the front springs and shocks are on. I'm gonna need to get longer brake hoses before I do any serious wheelin. I think this 3" lift is gonna be just right for some 33x10.50s.....maybe 35s sometime later. I'll hopefully be able to do the rears this weekend.

Suspension is done, now it's time for some new 33s. I'm thinking I'll go with some 33x10.50 BFG KM2s

Well I figured it was about time for an update. I've been a busy man here lately. Trying to strike a balance between Christmas shopping (uhg, I HATE shoppin) and some one on one time with the Sherpa. So, plans have changed just a little. I've decided to stay with 33s so I chose to regear to 4.88 instead of 5.29s. I'm gonna do a complete front axle rebuild (hub dial to hub dial). This rotor is trashed... Along with 4.88s I've decided to Aussie the front and spool the rear. And so it begins...you like my redneck flower pot propane burner garage heater? It actually works pretty dang good! Fabbed up a fixture out 2" angle to hold the 3rd member while I worked on it. Got the idea from gearinstalls.com/thanks ZUK...worked great!! Aussie done... Took my time with ring and pinion...used a solid spacer instead of a crush sleeve...all new bearings from Trail Gear...finally got a pattern that I was satisfied with. Not really a difficult job if you prep, have the right tools, and TAKE YOUR TIME. A 12 ton Harbor Freight press is a MUST HAVE for a job like this... Driver side done... And look what the brown truck brought!! Merry Christmas to me!!! BFG KM2 33x10.50x15s Well, ya'll have a happy holiday...I'll be tackling the rear third member after the holidays...more pics then. ;D

OK...time for an update. Well, I moved on to the rear 3rd member setup... Out with the old.... Some cleaning and new pinion bearing cup installation... I cannot stress the importance of some essential tools... like a press... Helps to put the spool in the freezer and... the ring gear in the oven at about 200 degrees (make sure you get spousal approval---my wife rocks!) for a nice slippery fit. when you're setting up a diff like this, take your time...it's very important to get a good pinion depth pattern and get the backlash set properly...not to mention correct carrier bearing and pinion bearing preload values... While I was doing this, I also finished up the front rebuild with a hub dial rebuild kit...new O-ring, ball, and spring...plus a nice coat of paint to go from this... to this... Wut did you say, teenager??? Sunday afternoon...garage cleanup complete...Sherpa idling outside in 24 dgree weather. Sitting on 33x10.50 KM2s, 3" suspension lift, 4.88 TG R&P, Aussie front, spooled rear...time for a little shakedown run... notice baby yota hiding on the other side... Well, carb/cam/exhaust is next....stay tuned!!
