Yeesh, another project! Been lurking for a while and have wanted an 82-83 Toyota 4x4 for years. My wife always had to go and remind me that we have two kids so when I learned of the Trekker, the search was on. Contacted Corey a year ago for tips in what to look (and look out) for, finally found one close enough and good enough to roll with, so away we go! Here it is: So you can see it's fairly unmolested and straight and the plan is to keep it that way - mostly. The plan is: Repaint in tan with Corey's stripe kit. 2-3" lift with 33x10.50 BFG's on chrome factory wheels. Swap front grille, lights, bumper for chrome 82-83 stuff. Clean up / re-do the interior mostly stock (not going crazy with the headliner stuff though!). Maybe add A/C? Drive and enjoy! I'll need some help here so will say a big thank you in advance! There are also a few things that are MIA so if anyone can help out or has some leads I'd greatly appreciate it. A quick list includes: Factory front seats with passenger tilt-forward mechanism. Shift boots and trim ring. Decent door panels. Factory radio. Rear hatch lock / handle (saw Corey has these as well). A hundred other things?! Like any good project, this won't be a quickie. Life, kids, that d**n job-thing getting in the way, finances, etc. ensure that! But I will try my best to keep this updated and starting this post will hopefully motivate me to do so. I live in Utah so hopefully can meet up with some of you in the future - noticed a few here from Colorado. Thanks for tagging along and I appreciate any input on these plans. Until the next post! -Scott

Ha! The lonely life of a Trekker! I think I've already switched gears a bit and am going to repaint it the original yellow color. Just too big a PITA to do a complete color change - especially considering the shape this one's in. If I was pulling it apart all the way might be a different story. Any ideas of who might have some Trekker parts laying around to fill in my blanks?
Also, what is the license plate light supposed to look like and are there repros available or was it used on a different model Toyota or something? Thanks!

Meant to ask - how big of a PITA is it to separate the rear and front halves? I see the million screws and the rear subframe mount, but my concern is the "glue" holding the halves together. Any suggestions to doing this correctly and not damaging the fiberglass would be great. Really need to replace the seal in between the two and the body guy wants to do it right. Thanks!

Hey Corey. Yeah, believe me, I've read through every page of your amazing build! there was just kind of a fast-forward moment removing the rear. How do you remove the lower, outer skin as shown? Is it just the elevator bolts holding top and bottom together and the screws into the cab? So technically, in terms of paint and seal work, removing the canopy and outer lower body would be sufficient, right? Thanks!

Thanks! yes .. once you remove the inside top plate , it will revile some more elevator bolts and pop rivets , and of course the front is screwed to the cab . I would just do this to do SOME OF the body work .. I would recommend you put it back together before you finish and paint .

Nice. Correct, we just wanted to get into the seal area to make sure all is solid and be able to shoot it correctly. Then reassemble to do finish work as you suggested. How does the hatch opening outer area separate from the tub? There is a "L" bracket under / between the back of the tub glued to the outer fiberglass panel that is also held by screws from inside. Remove those screws, but is it also epoxied along that seam and how is best to separate it? Thanks again.

its all part of the frame .. the outer cover (inside the trekker) is just screwed onto the frame , then the outer panel is epoxied as you mentioned . we make both pieces . last one I replaced , I was just able to "pry" it off .. it took a layer of fiberglass with it in some spots , but it came off pretty easy

Alright, got it all pulled apart and back into the hands of the body guy. Man, they sure weren't stingy when it came to gluing these things together! Must have putty-knifed off 50 pounds of that goo. Anyway, came apart nicely with no real damage so here are the pics: Started a little fiberglass repair on the lower bedside and watchful eyes will notice I also picked up some stock chrome wheels that were already mounted with some BFG 33x10.50's. I've decided to go with some tan, marine grade carpet (like what is inside of modern day shells) for the canopy and I think I'm going to go for making it a removable piece. Has anyone successfully pulled that off and, if so, got any pics or suggestions? My plan is to use a standard type of seal between the canopy and tub, epoxy in some large nut plates under the sill of the fender skins, utilize the original interior trim strip above the canopy sill and secure it with heavy-duty thumb screws. I've seen a couple of hardtop quick release kits intended for Jeeps that kind of point in that direction. Still scratching my head a bit on the canopy to cab connection. Would appreciate some thoughts and I'll keep updating!
