I bought what i thought was a 81 trekker about 6 years ago for $500. it has some right fender damage. but the rest of the trekker looks great. i really haven't done much with it in the last 6 years except for move a couple times, start it and drive it a bit, you know keep in gas flowing through it. Now i want to fix it up, however I'm confused. everything i read, is about a 81 or 82 trekkers. my titles says its a 1980. the engine is a 20r with a L43 behind it. Behind the Cab is a full fiberglass shell. Does anyone know if this is a trekker, or just a PU with a conversion? im wondering which model PU i should be looking for for replacement parts and stuff? any help would be great.
i will post some pics tomorrow.

Welcome! Paul is probably more of an expert on this stuff than me, but if your titles say '80 and you have a 20R, it's probably an '80. I have heard rumors of some '80 model Trekkers, but haven't seen proof yet. What date is stamped on your driver's side door jam? Mine says it was built in 81 even though it's an 82 model. Do you have a Winnebago sticker under your driver's side dash? That will have a date on it too. Looking forward to the picks!

welcome aboard ... yes .. check the production date on the drivers door post first .. I to have heard about the early "winnabego" prototypes starting in /80 .. but dont know a difinative answer . If it has the winnabego sticker , it would absolutly be a Trekker .. if not .. it could have been an /80 converted with a Trekker back 1/2 . like this one ... www.geocities.com/xtreme_offroad/VicTrekker.htmlIt also could be a very early /81 (8009 production) and had a 20R engine replace the original 22R ? .. in any case .. more info. please . and get those pics up and depending on the "parts" you need ... basically 79-83's 4x4s are the same .. alot of the 2wd pieces are also the same 79-83 .. again , just deopends on what your looking for . .

Hey Guys thanks for the Replies! to Start ill answer the questions posted.
What date is stamped on your driver's side door jam? JUL / 80
Do you have a Winnebago sticker under your driver's side dash? from what i can tell the dash was replaced so, no.
Is the bed also fiberglass? Yes, everything behind the front Cab is fiberglass.
The model # reads RN 37L - KDA Frame # on the ID plate under the hood and the driver side plate VIN# match. RN37 - 03927
This mystery continues, i can clearly see the engine is a 20R by its badging. the ID plate under the hood indicates it has a L43 transmission, which makes sense. However when i get under the hood to compare the illustrations from the Haynes repair manual, i see that it does not look like a L43 it follow the L45 illustration. Can a L45 be mounted to the 20R.
So i have few things im trying to do. 1. i want to repair the damage to the front side (mostly body work, frame and mounting point still straight). 2 fix the clutch, right now, i cannot shift into gear. and 3 fix the oil leaks. it looks like there is a couple. (engine runs great, purrs like a kitten. and the 4th. thing, i would like to slightly modify it, lift it up a bit but keep its smooth ride. Any help would be great.
Thanks. i hope the pics help explain the stoy. oh and i should also mention the guy i bought it from, was the original owner and lived in Madison WI. i believe this was the location of the Winnebago/Toyota partnership.
ok i cant figure out how to post images. can someone explain?

Paul ... why PM ? I think we would ALL like to be involved here . please share your opinions !!!! I have noticed a couple of things that are "not quite right" on your trekker .. The cab to bed connection is more of a seam on the original , and not a panel .. and the tail gate is not correct ? but it's exactly what I was thinking for a replacement .. I'd like to see more pics of the gate please also .. the headlamps are square ... a /82 + piece . .

I actually like the design on tailgate hatch.
I think the theory of it possibly being a hybrid that someone made with a junkyard half of a trekker might be correct. I am pretty sure the rear bumper is a 3rd gen truck.
The seam as Corey mentioned is not quite correct with it being 'seamless'. That is probably what is throwing me off wheelbase wise, like it might just be a couple of inches longer. Curious if you can measure the distance from the bottom of the door frame (corner) to the front of the rear wheel well? I measured mine and it is 24 3/8"
The data plate is kind of munched, wonder if someone had a wrecked truck and used that in order to get a title maybe? Random thought.
Transmission wise I am pretty sure a 20r will mount to an L45. I have seen 20R's in '88's before.
Eitherway you have a very clean truck in great condition for a rust belt truck. If you get the chance, please take it to Adam at 4xinnovations so he can get some measurements ;D he does some great tube work for toyotas but doesn't see a 1st Gen in his area very much...just kidding...

Completely assembled4 speed manual transmission Completely Assembled? That leads me to believe this was not done by Winnebago but down the road. To my understanding trucks shipped to Winnebago were shipped to them as a 'Cab and Chassis'...
