so I'm just going to start with the assembly , because the dissassembly is way to greassy and messy to take pics ..
so hopefully this helps someone .
once everything has been cleaned up , polished , and painted time to assemble .
FIRST thing to do is to slip on the felt , rubber and steel .. the parts for the back of the knuckle .. VERY IMPORTANT !
inner axle seal is the next thing to be replaced .. sometimes getting these out is a real pain .. what can I say .. just be patient , and get it out .. failier of this seal is the usual cause of contamination of the knuckle gease , and eventual distruction of the knuckle bearings
OLD SEAL
OLD seal REMOVED and cleaned
NEW seal installed
With the new knuckle bearings, you have to replace the races , so once you have punched out the old races save one . There are little "cut outs" on the knuckle ball , underside ... making the races very easy to "punch" out . I use the old race , as a tool .. upside down .. (thin to thin) to install the new races .
time to grease up the new bearings .. I like to pack them by hand , I just was tought that way .
be sure you use the best grease you can find . Toyota recommends a Moly grease , but now a days , there is better grease out there .. I'm using LUCAS .. just a personal choice .
while my hands are dirty , I'm doing the axles .. pack em' full .
INSTALLING the KNUCKLE
so this part is again a little tricky .
when the axle is dismantled , the upper steering arms , and lower bearing supports/pins have shims .. It is VERY IMPORTANT these are bagged and tagged as they center the axle .
in the knuckle kit , are new shims .. either use the old ones , or measure , and use the new ones .
so at this part its best you have 3 hands .. can be frusterating , what I do .. Is loosly install the lower bearing support , and bearing on the support , install the upper bearing .. then with some "finess" slide the knuckle into position , and "pop" on the upper steering arm .. tighten slowly , moving in a criss cross pattern .. as well as use new lock washers .
torque to 71FT lbs .
once the knuckles are in place , time to bolt on the wipers you installed ealier . steels bolt over the felt , rubber , and steel you installed ealier .
Axles go in next .. with the flat spots , on the ball .. up and down they will slide in .. you may have to move the pinion flange a bit to seat the axles in to the pinion gears ..
once there in , pack them with the grease .
now its time to install the bearing hub , backing plate , gaskets .. all in one shot ..
If you look at the pic above , you see a little helpfull hint .. I use an exhaust stud (couldnt find on today , so I cut a bolt) and slide everything onto/over it , in sequance ... and then put in the bolts .. again .. with new lock washers . and torque to spec .
