Life long toyota fan, been around on yotatech, marlin crawler, but new here. Im looking at an '81 toyota this week I've arranged to pick up, but based on a pic the guy sent me, what he calls a fiberglass backi looks like a trekker based the shell and bed having no seam and a long single window. I was only getting the truck because it was a good deal and wanted to part out but I understand these are somewhat rare, as I've never seen one. Basically wondering if this is something I should even consider parting out or if there would be any interest in parts here or what they are worth??

Can you post the pic here so we can see it? Also, is there a Winnebago sticker under the dashboard? That is the easiest way to be sure if it has not been taken off.

Hope the pic shows up. This is all I have until the weekend. Where exactly should I look for a winnebago sticker under the dash? Is it hidden?

dash sticker would be , as your sitting in the drivers seat .. on the lower dash , just infront of your left knee cap .
I can see by the pic though , it is absolutly a Trekker . it would be an total shame of you to part it . Most trekkers I have seen parted , dont fare well for profit . about the only "trekker specific" pieces you might be able to sell would be the canopy windows and maybe the back hatch . the complete back 1/2s , I have seen , have taken fellas years to sell . the rest of the pieces are just 79-83 4x4 parts . you might have better luck selling it as a whole trekker .
as far as value ? really couldnt say with out more detailed pics , interior and such

Awesome! After reading up on the history, I don't know if I could get rid of it, heck it'd be the only one in town. Perhaps I'll have to sell my '83 once I finish the restoration to fund this one ;D More pics to come this weekend!

Well, upon arriving I discovered that the Trekker was not close to as nice as I had expected from the pic I got from the seller. Wanting to know more history on how this car ended up here, apparently, the Trekker along with 4 other cars were abandoned on the property he bought some 10 years ago and had no papers whatsoever with it or keys (screwdriver ignition ). By the reg. sticker, it's been out of the DMV database ten years and has no back fees due. Also, it runs like a champ and had a recent head replacement done to it before it was left to rot, looking more like 121k instead of 221k, but I will be running a carfax soon if they even cover this year. Upon looking it over, it was in far worse shape, missing the rear seat & belts, the rear window/hinges, fiberglass back hatch & lock, rusted floor pans (bad driver side), stripped headliner, trashed windshield & door panels, bad seats. With the condition of the engine and (odd for 1981) 5spd transmission, weird white silicone sealant for the top, I managed to get it for 275. Looks like it will need the full restoration and some fiberglass work not to mention loads of parts and one of those sick decal packs with the trekker logo ;D

Haha, definitely a barn find. If it wasn't a Trekker, I probably wouldn't have driven that far to save her . I wasn't looking for something that needed a full restoration since my '83 SR5 is almost done, but given the rarity, the fact that it actually runs great, and has a mint Winnie sticker was enough for me. Looks like I will be ordering a LOT of parts though for the back from toyotafiberglass ;D down the road... Safe to say it's officially NOT a partout by any means.

It sounds like this one is in the right hands. Glad it's being saved and not going to continue to waste away in a field. Looks like it's already been parted out a little bit with all the little parts that are missing. How is the frame? That would be my main concern. Emissions would be my second. I can't believe it runs! That's a bonus. I had an 81 Toyota 4x4 with a 5spd. I think that was the first year for the 5spd. I noticed it also has the defrost vents on the dash pad. I didn't think those were added until 82. I've seen those white stripes on other Trekkers, so I think those were an optional stripe package. The 81's are my favorite year. Looking forward to seeing this one get some tlc!
