ok so my trekker has a 4 speed and its shot from what I hear. I cant look at it yet due to the fact that I am overseas but will be home soon. I do have a 83 donor truck with a 5 speed in good working condition. My question is will this 5 speed be a direct bolt in or is there some things that need to be changed, drive shafts, t-case. dose is anyone know. As far as I can tell it would be pretty much bolt in but I could be wrong. Any input would help.

That would be sweet. Yeah when you guys do the swap if you run in to anything crazy let me know. And of course some pic would be greatly appreciated. I plan to do my swap in about 4 weeks when I get back to Washington state.

I've always wondered about this as well...I know if going with a later model transmission there is the need to move the crossmember back a few inches but I haven't been able to get much information on how to actually do it. I've heard some people say you can just use U bolts over the frame but I'm not sure how secure that would be at highway speeds (higher vibration levels).
Anyone have any ideas/pics how to relocate the crossmember back?

you don't need to move anything ... it is a direct swap , I just did it in an /81

In my case I found out that the donor tranny out of my 83 was a w56 and there was crossmember issues and drive line issues but all in all easy swap. Just a disclaimer I was told it was w56 weather or not it is I could not say but it bolted right up moved the crossmember back and got the rear drive line cut down. But all in all not too hard. Just took her down the road too for the first time and it was aswome

Awesome! How did you end up attaching the crossmember to the frame? U-bolts over the frame or did you weld new mounts? Thanks

I don't know enough about the tranny to really say. What was I was told was it was a w56. Not sure though it was longer then the tranny in my trekker though so I had to mod things to make it work. I guess I need to do some homework on it I am just happy it goes down the road now. As far as the xmember yes ubolts are a way to do it I am going to go that route this weekend but for now I built my own x member out of the existing one it dose the job but not too happy with the way it turned out. In a few hours my tires will be on it and then it gets it first run on the freeway so wish me luck
