So I have only ever seen a Trekker twice before in real life. It was over 12 years ago and I saw the same Trekker on two different occasions. The first time I had ever heard of one was from a mid 90's Four Wheeler Magazine article on a real nice one. Since then I have always liked them and kept an eye out for them. My first 4x4 was a 1983 Short Box SR5, so I can spot an old mini truck from a mile away. But despite my keen eyes, I have yet to see another one anywhere I the area I live. So I have just resigned myself to believing there are none around here. I was wrong.
So the other day I was visiting in the neighboring town and was checking out the newly opened Wal-mart. I was headed for the exit and was walking past the desk of one of those in-house car insurance brokers that sometimes sets up shop in a big box store. There were 3 guys there and one of them was taking excitedly to the girl behind the desk and I heard him say this, "....yeah but it kinda looks like a canopy on it but it is all open inside with a bench seat back there, it's like an early version of the Toyota 4Runner...". That comment made me stop in my tracks and do a 180 turn. I asked the guy talking if he was referring to a Trekker, to which he replies "Yes, this guy here just bought one! And he bought it from this other guy". I couldn't believe my ears. I asked where these guys lived and they replied right here in this town. I still couldn't believe it! A Trekker, right here in town under my very nose, how could I have missed it??? Anyways, I should have asked for pictures or if the truck was in the parking lot, but I didn't. Oh well. Maybe I will see it yet. But what are the odds that I would have been walking by at that very second to here that conversation??? And the town isn't very large, so I am going to put out the feelers to my Toyota buds and tell them to keep their eyes and ears open for this lost Trekker for me.
