Are the Trekker tubs the same size as the short beds?

yep , basically it just the top rail (trekker is wider) and lack of tailgate that is different

How much wider? I'm wondering if an off the shelf 1st gen soft top would work on my trekker.. With some fabbed up supports

not the outer measurement .. just the inner .
obviously the bed matches the cab , so if you could find a soft top for a first gen , I'm positive it would fit

Oh okay. I wonder if it would be possible to make a 1st gen 4runner soft top fit? Are those rear tubs quite a bit larger?
